A shorter diagnostic pathway needs more than an analyzer. Specify sample collection, protective supplies, transport, laboratory handling and result reporting together, then identify the equipment required at each step.

The South Kivu experience reported in 2024 combined local testing capacity with sample logistics and technician training. The purchasing lesson is to fund the complete workflow rather than treating instrument delivery as the finish line.

Map the handoffs

For each collection site, name the receiving laboratory and document who supplies containers, labels and transport packaging. Agree how delays, rejected samples and missing identifiers are reported. Let the laboratory define specimen requirements and handling procedures; a general equipment quote cannot establish those clinical conditions.

Specify the laboratory functions separately

A biological safety cabinet supports a defined handling workflow; a real-time PCR instrument performs amplification and detection with compatible methods. They have different roles. The products below are equipment categories to assess, not a validated mpox testing package or a substitute for assay approval and biosafety assessment.

Accept the workflow, not only the hardware

Before handover, verify installation requirements, applicable cabinet certification, staff competency and the agreed data export format. Budget for consumables and quality controls separately from the instrument. An end-to-end trial should show that a correctly identified sample can reach the laboratory and that the authorized result can reach the requesting service.
