Do not use together with strong acid Platinum features high chemical stability. It can be dissolved in aqua regia and molten alkali, also soluble in mixture of hydrochloric acid‑hydrogen peroxide, hydrochloric acid‑perchloric acid. Under normal temperature, platinum will not react with common strong acid, alkali and other reagents. However, platinum is vulnerable to corrosion under high‑temperature conditions.
Notes for flame test For each flame test, dip platinum wire into concentrated hydrochloric acid and burn it in flame until colorless before next test.
Cleaning with hydrochloric acid Clean platinum wire with hydrochloric acid. Sulfuric acid is not suitable for cleaning due to non‑volatility. Concentrated nitric acid is also prohibited for cleaning as it tends to decompose.
Yellow discoloration When platinum wire is stored together with gold, friction caused by moving will leave yellow metal powder adhered to platinum surface, which will lead to yellow discoloration of platinum over time.
