1. Overview

Hydrotherapy refers to a method that uses water with different temperature, pressure and composition to act on the human body, using water as a medium to achieve prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Treating diseases with water has a long history in China. The medical value of water lies in its important physical properties: large heat capacity, strong thermal conductivity, good conductivity and good solubility. Thus, the stimulating effects of water temperature, mechanical properties and chemical composition can be used to achieve disease prevention and treatment.

2. Classification of Hydrotherapy

There are numerous classifications of Hydrotherapy:

  1. By temperature: cold water bath, low temperature water bath, non-warm water bath, warm water bath, hot water bath;
  2. By action method: rubbing bath, rinsing bath, wrapping with wet cloth, soaking bath, shower;
  3. By water composition: fresh water bath, drug bath, air-water bath;
  4. By action parts: whole body bath, local bath;
  5. By action form: pool swimming, various water sports training.

3. Action Principle of Hydrotherapy

  1. Temperature stimulation: Improves and enhances the body's ability to regulate temperature;
  2. Mechanical action: Hydrostatic pressure, water shock, and buoyancy effects;
  3. Chemical action: Minerals in the water; additionally, drugs can be added according to clinical needs to chemically stimulate the body.

4. Operation Technology of Hydrotherapy

  1. Sponge bath: Rubbing the body with towels soaked in water at a specific temperature;
  2. Rinse: Rinsing local or whole body with water at a specific temperature;
  3. Wrapped with wet cloth: Soaking part of the body in water at different temperatures. Direct stimulation by hot and cold water causes physiological changes in local or whole body, achieving therapeutic effects;
  4. Whole body soaking bath: Soaking the patient's whole body in water for treatment;
  5. Shower: Spraying water jets onto the human body under certain pressure for treatment;
  6. Butterfly-shaped hydrotherapeutor: Cross-section is butterfly or 8-shaped bath tank, allowing medical staff easy access to patients;
  7. Walking bath: Conducting walking training in the bath;
  8. Vortex bath: Using motor-generated vortex to act on the human body;
  9. Bubble bath: Using bubbles for micro-massage and temperature stimulation on the body;
  10. Movement in water: Using water temperature, buoyancy, and hydrostatic pressure to perform various functional exercises;
  11. Sauna: Cleaning the skin and treating diseases.
