Bunsen Burner Usage Instructions

Usage Steps

  1. Open the laboratory windows to ensure good ventilation.
  2. Connect the Bunsen burner hose to the gas line and place the burner on a fireproof board.
  3. Close the air hole at the base of the burner and hold a lit match at the gas outlet.
  4. Open the gas valve to ignite the burner. The flame will initially be orange.
  5. Open the air hole to let in fresh air. The flame will turn blue and the temperature will rise.
  6. After use, close the air hole first, then turn off the gas supply.
  7. Disconnect the Bunsen burner from the gas line.

Usage Notes

  1. The fuel used by the Bunsen burner is gaseous at room temperature; pay special attention to pipeline safety.
  2. Before use, check that all switches are in the closed position. Only then can the main gas switch be opened.
  3. Do not open the gas before igniting. Ignite first, then gradually open the gas supply. If a gas leak is detected, it must be repaired immediately. To ignite, place a lighter or match at the burner's top opening, then open the gas valve to an appropriate level. If the gas does not ignite within 3-5 seconds, close the valve, wait 10 seconds, and repeat. If ignition still fails, check the gas supply.
  4. If the pipeline is too long, initial ignition may fail as gas has not yet reached the burner. The flame should be yellowish-red when lit; adjust to the appropriate size. If repeated attempts fail, check for gas supply issues or obstructions.
  5. After ignition, open the air switch to allow complete combustion, turning the flame blue. Insufficient air causes a yellow flame with low temperature and carbon deposits. Adjust air intake to achieve a light blue flame for optimal temperature.
  6. When not in use, turn off the gas immediately. Close the air switch first, then the gas valve.
  7. Never leave a lit Bunsen burner unattended. After the experiment, turn off the main gas supply and burn off residual gas in the line.
  8. If a fire occurs, turn off the gas valve immediately and take other emergency measures.
  9. In windy or cold conditions, do not keep doors and windows closed to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning from insufficient air.
  10. Do not use alcohol lamps or flame-style Bunsen burners for extended periods in biosafety cabinets, as heat can disrupt airflow and shorten HEPA filter life.
  11. Always turn off the gas switch after use.

Bunsen Burner Precautions

  1. Use a heat-insulating board to prevent the table from catching fire. Keep books and paper away from the Bunsen burner. Tie up long hair before use.
  2. Always ignite the flame first, then open the gas valve.
  3. If the air hole is fully open, the flame may burn inside the hole, turning green and producing loud noise. Immediately turn off the gas valve if this occurs.
  4. The tube and neck of the Bunsen burner remain hot after use; avoid touching them.
