Dialysis Machine and How It Works

A dialysis machine is a life-saving medical device designed to perform the functions of the kidneys when they can no longer operate effectively. It removes excess waste, toxins, and fluids from the blood in patients with kidney failure.
How It Works:
Accessing the Blood: Blood is drawn from the patient via a fistula, graft, or catheter.
Filtration Process: The blood is pumped through a dialyzer (artificial kidney) where it is filtered.
Dialysate Exchange: A special fluid called dialysate absorbs toxins and excess electrolytes via a semipermeable membrane.
Clean Blood Return: The purified blood is returned to the patient’s body.
Key Functions:
Removes urea, creatinine, and toxins
Balances electrolytes (potassium, sodium, calcium)
Controls fluid levels and blood pressure
Prevents complications of kidney failure
Dialysis can be performed in a hospital, clinic, or at home using hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis machines.
